Control Strategies

The occupancy level and daylighting areas of both the UC satellite and Fresh Food Company are a valuable consideration to highlight the potential change to the lighting control systems. There can be a use for singular strategies or a combination of all three. With occupancy control, it is important to note the hours for the facility when not heavily used.

Fresh Food Company

Late Night: 10:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. (Sundays only)

In Fresh Food Company, it has an average of 3 hours that it is not heavily occupied and 7 hours that it is closed. With that information, only a certain amount of bulbs need to be on for the 24 hours based on security reasons. It can be assumed that a third of the bulbs can be turned on for 17 hours compared to the 24 based on the occupancy levels.

Also with daylighting, it is important to note the amount of hours that there is daylight in the day and also how many days of the year Houston has plentiful amount of sun. Assuming that the interior spaces can receive a good amount of daylight between 9:00 a.m. through 4 p.m. and that Houston has 204 days with plentiful sun than a third of the bulbs can also be on for 17 hours instead of the whole 24. This does not take into account the change in light levels from some light fixtures such as in figure1.

However, these minimal savings do not take into account the energy savings from HVAC and reduction of internal heat gain.

Summary:

The lighting control systems present significant benefits in promoting the next step in energy reduction for the facility. The relationship between the user, light fixtures and environment has grown exponentially and will continue to grow in order to meet future needs. While some of the savings do not take into account incentives, HVAC reduction savings, and longer use of bulbs, the understanding of them are shown in the reduction of less bulbs being on and turned on for fewer hours.

After examining these factors and values from all sources and figures for the types of light bulbs and the facilities around the University of Houston, we have come to the conclusion that we should make the switch to CREE LED Light bulbs in these facilities as soon as possible. Although these bulbs have a generally higher upfront cost, they pay themselves off over time due to their low power consumption because of their more efficient structure inside the bulb. Apart from this, LED bulbs are able to provide a clearer lighting environment, which is a vast improvement from the yellowish tint that is emitted from halogen and incandescent light bulbs.
